Inlays/ Onlays

In restoration dentistry, inlays and onlays are used to rebuild a tooth that has lost a significant portion of its structure due to trauma or decay. Unlike dental fillings which are placed directly into the tooth, inlays and onlays, are ‘indirect fillings’ which are fabricated at our dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. There is a slight difference between Inlays and Onlays. The inlay is fabricated as a single solid material to fit the specific shape of the tooth cavity. The onlay, is not quite a crown but is fabricated as a single, solid piece and placed on top of the existing root structure.

Reasons you might need inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are recommended to patients with the following problems:

  • Large cavities or decay.
  • Broken or fractured tooth /teeth.
  • Large dental fillings which are failing.
  • Teeth that require strength due to a heavy bite.

Materials Used For Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are a long term type of restorative dentistry that are highly durable and designed to last a lifetime.Typically three different materials can be used for Inlays and Onlays. These are:

  • Porcelain
  • Gold
  • Composite

The material selected is based on the choice made by the patient, position of the Inlay or Onlay and the price.
