The Procedure
The procedure for Amalgam (silver) filling consists of a few steps:
- Local anaesthesia is administered around the damaged tooth to numb the area that requires treatment.
- The tooth is cleaned thoroughly, so there are no food particles, debris or tartar lodged between the teeth.
- The tooth is prepared and shaped to accept the amalgam by mechanical retention rather than being bonded or cemented.
- A band can be placed around the tooth, depending on the size of the filling. This is done so that the filling can hold into place.
- The Amalgam is packed into the effected tooth and carved in to the correct shape.
- Amalgam hardens within a few minutes, however it requires 24 hours for it to set completely.
