Snoring Appliances

Snoring is the harsh sound that occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in your throat. The air passage becomes restricted causing the tissues to vibrate as you breathe.

Causes for Snoring

Various reasons lead to snoring.

  • Being overweight results in forming of fatty tissue around the neck. This will make your throat narrower and it will vibrate more easily.
  • Consumption of alcohol or medications, such as antihistamines will slow the brain response and relaxes the air-passage.
  • The nasal passage gets irritated and inflamed due to smoking.
  • Allergies, Asthma, sinus infections, and colds cause the nasal passage to swell.
  • A cleft palate, enlarged adenoids or a narrow throat can lead to snoring.
  • Sleeping on your back makes your tongue fall directly back. This can get in the way of your airflow.
  • Ageing, middle-aged men in general have a wider neck and more soft tissue which causes vibration.
  • Snoring is more likely in pregnancy

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea, or Obstructive sleep apnoea, occurs when a person’s throat is partly or completely blocked while they are asleep. It not only affects your sleep but can severely impact your health and quality of life.

Sleep Apnoea Symptoms

The symptoms of sleep apnoea include:

  • Pauses in breathing during sleep; this may be noticed by other people.
  • Insomnia
  • Waking up gasping for air or choking
  • Tiredness and feeling unrefreshed after sleep
  • Loud snoring
  • Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Morning headache
  • Lack of energy throughout the day
  • Irritability

How Can Your Dentist Help With Snoring?

One of the most effective ways of treating loud snoring caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is the use of a customised oral appliance, known as Mandibular Advancement Design. This plastic oral device helps to keep your airways open as you sleep.

Follow-up visits are needed to ensure the optimal fit of the oral appliance and may need to be adjusted over time to ensure maximum effectiveness.
