White Fillings

In restorative dentistry ‘white fillings’, also known as composite filling, are the most common type of procedure.

What Is White Filling?

A white filling is used to restore the functionality when a part of tooth is damaged due to decay, trauma, cavities or has been partially broken. It’s also an aesthetic option to provide a natural enhancement to the teeth appearance.

Composite fillings are made of a ceramic and plastic compound which gives it the natural tooth colour. As part of the filling process, the composite is bonded with the tooth directly, thus helping the non-functional tooth to gain its structure and support.

Benefits of Composite Filling

White fillings can be recommended by a dentist for a variety of reasons:

  • Repair a broken, chipped or fractured tooth/teeth
  • Can be used to close the gaps between teeth
  • Can be used to reshape the existing teeth.

However, it is not recommended as a part of restorative dentistry for back teeth that have large cavities. Heavy bite, clench, grinding of the teeth or large spaces would not support bonding. For such instances, Inlays or Onlays are recommended.

The Procedure

The procedure requires a few steps, which will be determined by observation & X-rays of the tooth.

During filling procedures, local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area that requires treatment.  Dr Kanowitz cleans away the decay inside the cavity, usually with a drill, before filling it in. Removing the decay prevents further damage. The tooth is etched and the filling is placed. Several layers of composite can be applied to achieve the correct shape and functionality. The tooth is then polished.
